Pueblo de Panay, Inc.

Roxas City – The University of the Philippines Alumni Association Capiz Chapter (UPACC) and Pueblo de Panay, Inc. (PDPI), in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), held the site blessing and groundbreaking for the proposed building for the UPV Public Service and Extension Program in Pueblo de Panay Township last December 3, 2018.

The planned two-storey UPV Graduate Extension Program Building is envisioned to provide excellent and affordable graduate education to students from Northern Panay, covering Capiz, Aklan, Antique, and Northern Iloilo. Construction on the 1,000 square meter lot donated by PDPI is scheduled to start on September 2019.

“Pueblo de Panay Township is happy to host the University of the Philippines (UP) Visayas Public Service and Extension Program. With 70 graduate students under its roster and increasing, we look forward to excellent, affordable and relevant  UP education in Northern Panay Island,” says Ms. Hariette Ong-Banzon, Vice Chairman of PDPI, herself a UP alumna.

The blessing and groundbreaking was followed by “Dinner for a Cause” at Circulo Convention Center where the fundraising drive “Build a School, Build a Future” was launched. This fundraising campaign aims to raise PhP55M for the construction and operation of the said building. “We are here tonight to launch this worthy project of constructing a building for the University of the Philippines. This physical edifice that the UP Alumni Association (UPAA) Capiz Chapter, in partnership with the Pueblo de Panay Township, dreams to build is significant for several reasons: 1.) It will be a testament to the alumni’s willingness to give back to UP; and 2.) It will provide the means to bring the National University to the people beyond the immediate communities where constituents units of UP are located,” says Dr. Ricardo Babaran, UPV Chancellor.

UPV Vice Chancellor for Administration, Prof. Mary Ann Gumban, in her speech during the “Dinner for a Cause, promised support and commitment to this development. “I would like to express my appreciation to Pueblo de Panay for giving UPV a special place in this vicinity.  As a gesture of reciprocity, we at UPV are making ourselves visible and available whenever Pueblo de Panay needs our support and where such support we can deliver effectively.  Our presence tonight is part of the university’s continuing commitment to strengthen our collaboration with the government and the industry towards national development.”

Former Capiz Governor Victor Tanco, Sr., President of the UPACC, encourages UP alumni to give back to their Alma Mater: “(This) will usher in the presence of UP in Capiz. It will show that the ISKOLARS NG BAYAN in Capiz, with the help of those all over the country and even abroad, are ready and willing to “GIVE BACK” to their beloved ALMA MATER. Come and join us in this Cause!”
